Recent Ceramics

My artistic research and studio practice center around intersections of play, interactivity, and studio art making. My studio practice revolves around play and experimentation and the pieces that I create convey the language of toys and collectibles in their form and size and beg to be arranged and rearranged.

My studio practice revolves around play and experimentation and the pieces that I create convey the language of toys and collectibles in their form, content, and size. Like figurines and toys my work begs to be arranged, rearranged, and played with. Texture and form drive my decision making as well as a desire to keep the content and narrative fluid. I work in primarily in low fire clay where I render some of the forms by hand and others are caste and altered.  I apply many layers of glaze and re-fire the pieces in order to achieve my surfaces.

3D Archive

My studio practice and artistic research has involved forays into performative objects, intervention like activities, and installation work.  In addition to traditional ceramic media I have worked with other moldable materials such as plaster, polymer clay, wax, and resin and I am familiar with an array of mold making methods including sand, investment, ceramic shell molds, multiple part plaster molds, rubber and alginate molds.  I have cast in aluminum, bronze, clay, wax, rubber, and plastic and have fashioned postives using 3D modeling.

Ceramic Archive

At the same time that I was exploring performative objects, intervention, and installation with sculptural materials and methods, I was applying this to clay.

My early ceramic work involved exploring large bulbous forms and fantastical surrealist inspired worlds and creatures.  Much of this work was handbuilt and hollow formed.  This work is low-fired multiple times with additional patinas such as paint, tool dip and wax added afterward.

2D Work

Alongside my sculptural work I create 2 dimensional work.  Sometimes this activity is a form of thinking and figuring that supplements my sculptural work and other times the work is work unto itself.  As a draftsman I utilize printmaking, watercolor, guache, charcoal, collage, pencil, and pen.
